Math: Build a Balance Scale
Make a balance scale with your child. Here is just one link to check out. https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Balance-Scale-for-Kids

There are many, many, many more options on-line. I just don’t know what each of you has at home. I have used the bottom of 2-liter pop bottles or juice containers, sour cream containers, paper plates and string or wire on a hanger, a meter stick, a stick etc.
·      Build a scale with a parent and free explore with it so you being to understand how the scale works. Carefully not to break it.
**Parents see the math activity for tomorrow so you have and idea of how big the cups or containers need to be at the end of your child’s balance scale. This scale will be needed for tomorrow’s lesson.

Tuesday
****Parent setup needed
Least/greatest

Language Arts: Take a sheet of plain paper divide it into thirds. At the top of each section print:
Beginning / Middle /End
·      Parents pick a story and read the first few pages to your child.
·      Then have your child copy the title of the book onto the paper and then have your child draw and colour a picture to represent the “Beginning” of the story in the first third of the paper.
·      Read the middle section of the story to your child and have them draw and colour a picture of what happens in the “Middle” of the story.
·      Finish reading the story and then have your child draw and colour a picture showing how the story ends.
·      Take a picture and send it to me.

·      Go to Raz Kids and read out loud for 10 minutes. Complete the comprehension questions after.

Math:   Hidden Weight * Parent setup needed
·      *Parents please find 5 small containers roughly the same size and fill each with substances of differing weight or densities.
·      *Label each container with a number 1 through 5
·      Let your child pick up two containers. Ask “Which is heavier?” “Which is lighter?” “Why do you think that?”
·      Let your child use the balance scale to see if they are right.
·      Have your child order the containers by weight, from least to greatest in weight
·      Have them guess what is in each container

** One important learning outcome is that containers with similar appearance may not be the same weight.
